March is Women’s History Month. President Jimmy Carter designated the first official National Women’s History Week back in 1980. The event didn’t just start then, however, nor is it restricted to the United States. In fact, International Women’s Day (IWD) had its roots way back in 1911. It’s currently observed each year on March 8 across the globe as a way to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. The theme for 2020? #EachforEqual. 

 

But what does #EachforEqual mean? 

 

Simply put, #EachforEqual means that while we are our own beings, no person is an island unto him or herself. Everything we say–everything we do (or don’t do)–impacts others. Collectively, women are powerful.Positive change can happen when women work together toward a common cause. However, with the power to influence others comes responsibility, and so decisions must be made carefully and thoughtfully to elicit the kind of positive change that benefits women and all humankind. 

 

International Women’s Day & Women’s History Month in the Show-Me State

 

OneMissouri has selected two remarkable women so far who we believe represent the Show-Me State in a powerful way. Phoebe Apperson Hearst and Lucile Bluford were strong, courageous, and confident in their ability to get things done. As a result, the impact of their efforts lives on today.

Although they are limited, there are some Missouri-based events scheduled in observance of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day for 2020, including:

  

 

OneMissouri wants to celebrate all the women who over the years have sacrificed their safety, risked their reputations, jeopardized their jobs, and had the courage to lead others in times when it’s felt like each step is upward. Our state is better because of you.
